About our project

Exponent is collecting data on behalf of a commercial technology company (“Our Client”). Our goal is to collect data from real-world public spaces in the United States for the purposes of training and fine-tuning machine learning models and algorithms that improve the technologies behind the products and services of the commercial technology company.

During our collection activities, our field teams will use consumer electronic devices (such as smartphones, tablets, or other similar products) to capture imagery, and/or videos in public spaces, like streets or parks. The focus of the collection is not on the people in these public spaces, and we do not intend to collect identifiable information or facial images of people, unless consent is obtained to do so. However, some incidental collection may be unavoidable in certain locations if individuals are in the background of our primary focus areas. To reduce the likelihood of this occurrence, collections will take place at off-peak times whenever possible. We will also use care to avoid areas of sensitivity, such as places of worship, hospitals, etc. The devices we are using will also collect associated location data (like GPS) and information about any public Wi-Fi networks present in the vicinity. The data mentioned above is collectively called “Raw Data.”
